Once again this year Fashion Week is ready to amaze us as always in Milan. Expected from 19 to 25 September 2023, the Women's Spring/Summer 2024 collections of the most famous brands in the industry will be unveiled, with numerous novelties and debuts including: Sabato de Sarno's first collection for Gucci (there is a lot of hype after the exit from the brand of Alessandro Michele), that of Peter Hawkings for Tom Ford, as well as Simone Bellotti for Bally and the long-awaited official debut on the catwalks of The Attico.

But for those not in the industry, what exactly is Fashion Week?

Fashion Week is a fundamental and extremely important event in the fashion industry, during which stylists, fashion houses and brands present their collections for the following season. These events are mainly organized in four major fashion capitals: Milan, Paris, New York and London. Fashion Week is an opportunity for insiders, journalists, buyers and celebrities to discover new trends and emerging styles.

How many Fashion Weeks are there every year? And how are they organised?

In the world of fashion, collections are divided into two main categories: Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter. Haute couture is considered a sartorial work of art, as it involves made to measure clothes for an exclusive and highly wealthy clientele. In contrast, Prêt-à-Porter is mass-produced and represents clothes destined for boutiques for sale to the general public. These two spheres of fashion have very distinct runway calendars. Haute Couture is mainly represented in Paris and is presented only twice a year, in January and July. These events are moments of extraordinary elegance and sophistication, where designers present unique and sophisticated creations. As for Prêt-à-Porter, the shows take place in four of the main fashion capitals: Milan, New York, London and Paris. Women's fashion has two Fashion Weeks, one in February and the other in September, while men's fashion is organized in two shows in January and June.

So, Fashion shows are real spectacular events, but their participation is reserved for a carefully selected public: seats are assigned exclusively to the lucky guests invited by the fashion houses. In the front row there are almost always VIP guests of the maison, renowned journalists of the sector, among whom (for the most important fashion shows) often stand out among the observers figures such as the director of Vogue, Anna Wintour, and famous celebrities who embellish the catwalk, helping to amplify the brand image and attract media attention to promote the new collection. Fashion shows are not only opportunities for pure entertainment, but also play an essential role for buyers, those who have the task of selecting and "ordering" the creations which will then populate the shelves of boutiques. These professionals, although lesser known, are of crucial importance as they play a fundamental role in ensuring the availability of new collections for the general public.
